Snack time - my favorite time. I'm learning you can have more than one favorite (as well as you can have as many best friends, not just one) so another new favorite time of mine is nap time.
Did you know that humans are the only mammal that doesn't nap. We choose not to actually, mostly because of the systems at play. Let me ask you this, just to prove a point - when was the last time YOU napped?
Napping/resting and Savasana-ing is hard. Sometimes doing "nothing" is the hardest, itchiest thing. Because the "work police" might get us. Let me give you this scenario. You've done your daily grind so then you stop at the grocery store, come home, drop bags, unload groceries while making a few phone calls/texts while helping kids with homework, while delegating chores around the house, maybe even unloading the dishwasher as a bonus. Then dinner, baths, bed and the cycle continues the next day.
What if we take that same scenario - daily grind, grocery store, come home. PAUSE. REST. REFLECT. RESET (I did a check, there are no "work police" on duty today, its ok) Then do whats next on the list. What would that be like? What would that feel like? Hmmmm....?
I'm doing my best to incorporate this practice into my life and my kids'. For many reasons, but here are a few:
1. Silence is one of the most sacred gifts we can give ourselves - why? Its the dwelling place of our soul. We live in a noisy busy world - its hard to find it, we have to create it.
2. Rest is where we repair. We work our bodies and minds so hard. They need a break, they need to heal. Which is why we do Savasana at the end of an hour practice. We work, we rest. And why you leave all blissed out after yoga.
3. Stress is the mother of all disease (ok, I'm going to get my herbalist hat on now) Stress comes from adrenal fatigue. Adrenals pumping - well, that our fight our flight. Ideally, our body and adrenals would like it if we are in 90% state of chill/its all good/rest state and 10% stress. Thats right - a dose of stress is good for us. Because you never know if there is going to be a tiger in the room and you need to fight it or high tail it. However, in this crazy mixed up world, we live 90% stress (OMG THERE ARE TIGERS EVERY WHERE!!) and 10% it might be all good. Our adrenals are pumping like mad which = stress = disease.
Friends, when we rest, when we are silent - we repair and heal. Its more than that - we are saving our own lives. We are living longer and healthier. We also reflect. Go back to that scenario again. In that state of rest before we transition into the next thing we can reflect on the work/day/moments passed. We can ask ourselves what we liked, what was special, we can slow down and remember.
Rested, reflected, refreshed. Ready to take on whats next.

P.S.
And incase you need to know what napping looks like - photo included.
How do I incorporate rest into my crazyass schedule? I set a timer for 30-45 minutes. I schedule it in and I show up for the appointment for myself like its the most important in the world. (and yes, my kids do it too) Nap time is my favorite time.
